What is Counselling and Psychotherapy?
We’re in the depths of winter and that can mean only one thing (amongst others)…Slow cooker season!
You see, counselling and psychotherapy i.e. therapy, is a bit like a slow cooker…it takes time and patience to produce something truly delicious. It begins with preparation before cooking, then the pot gets warmer but it might still seem like nothing is happening. After a while the kitchen starts to fill with the smells of layers of (sometimes complex) flavour. Over time, the flavour becomes more intense and rich as we anticipate the end result… the meal that promises comfort and satisfaction, to bring energy to and nourish our bodies and minds.
Counselling and psychotherapy are both types of therapy, available to help people address mental health issues or concerns. They are both forms of talking therapy that involve sharing problems with a qualified and registered therapist in a confidential setting.
Each and every one of us has an individual story that has shaped our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. Once we understand that story and gain insight of our unique experience, we have the knowledge to heal, and knowledge is power. My aim through counselling and psychotherapy, is not only to help you unlock this power, but to help you create your own set of tools, techniques, and mindful moments to help fill your KIIT.
What’s the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Counselling usually involves a shorter-term treatment that focuses on a specific issue such as helping people develop coping strategies. Counselling can also help people identify and find solutions to their problems, like changing their behaviours or mindset.
Psychotherapy is usually a longer-term treatment that looks at a broader range of issues, helping people to understand their feelings and experiences, to personally help them develop and grow. Psychotherapy can help people change their thought patterns and how they see themselves in the world.
Both counselling and psychotherapy are types of talking therapy used to address mental health issues which provide a safe space to talk, to help people understand their problems and cope with life’s ups and downs.
